Monte-Carlo: the draw

13.04.2014 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger will open the clay-court season with the Masters 1000 tournament in Monte-Carlo this week.

After a first-round bye, Roger will either meet Ivo Karlovic (ATP 52) or Radek Stepanek (ATP 40) in round number two.

He could then play Jerzy Janowicz (ATP 21) in the round of the last sixteen, before possibly facing Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (ATP 12) in the quarter-finals.

Roger could then be in for another clash with Novak Djokovic (ATP 2) - the current title-holder - in the semis.

Good luck against Radek. One step at a time. I hope the weather will be warm and sunny for you on Wednesday. Go Roger!

Yuki: if you asked your important question on sites like tennis.com, the best answers magically disappear. In 25 GS events since 2008 AO, Federer's half had Djokovic in 16 GS events and Nadal in 4 GS events -- thus Fed’s half had Djokovic or Nadal in 20 of last 25 GS events (Nadal skipped 3 GS)! Between 2008 and 2011 (16 GS), Fed’s half had Djokovic in a statistically improbable 14 of 16 GS events (fishy!) – until this revelation was publicized.

In past 25 GS events since 2008 AO, Nadal's half had Djokovic or Federer in only 7 events -- thus, Nadal did not have to face Djokovic or Fed before final in other 18 events (minus 3 GS events Nadal skipped). Nadal's half had Djokovic in only 3 GS events (08, 10, 13 FO) -- Nadal's half never had Djokovic in all 19 non-clay GS events! Nadal's half had Fed in only 4 GS events (12 AO, 14 AO, 12 W, 13 USO). Since Nadal's half does not get Djokovic -- it's Fed's half who gets Djokovic.

Actually I hope Roger will meet Nadal in Monaco, because that would mean Roger would be in the Final. And his chances are much better in a best of three than in a best of five against Nadal. I think it was Mats Wilander who said that he believes that Nadal actually doesn't really know that well how to play a best of three match. Madrid may be the best place to beat Nadal on clay for Roger, but a Monaco final would be not bad, especially since it has been a while since he made it.... :-)
