Roger battles back to reach semis

18.04.2014 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger came back from one set down at the Monte Carlo Masters today to defeat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 2-6, 7-6(6), 6-1 and book a spot in the semis. It was our champ's 950th career victory.

Roger struggled in the opening set as he dropped his serve and clearly lost the set. Play in the second set was more even, eventually going into a tie-break where Roger just managed to fight off Tsonga's strong shots and capture the set. An early break in the decider gave Roger a real boost, with our champ going all the way, only leaving Tsonga one single game.

Roger will next face either defending champion Novak Djokovic or Guillermo Garcia-Lopez for a place in the final.

Stan never looked in danger, he played like a champ. He almost bageled Ferrer first set, second set a lot closer, but no contest in tie break.
Roger and Stan could be an interesting match, it is all whether Stan can cope with the fact that Roger is at the other end. I think Roger has the mental advantage, but potentially Stan has the game.

I'm still skeptical about how much of an influence it's having.
Did see him holding his wrist at times, but Djokovic's ground strokes are basically sound. Mainly because good groundstroke technique requires the wrist to stay firm but still.
The mental discomfort of playing with pain may be a whole other matter.

Wrist injury Shatir?

If Roger makes it through here, he will definitely have his work cut out for him against Stan. He just demolished Ferrer in the first set. Had a bit of a lull in the second but got it done quite easily in the tie break. It will not be an easy match. Also remember Stan has beaten Roger on clay, it is his best surface.

Interesting fact SHATIR. Perhaps history will repeat itself.

Great, just one more set!
Did anyone watch the Stan vs Ferrer match? Was it a close match? How is Stan playing? What do you guys think are Roger's chances against Stan if he gets to the final?
