Defeated in Rome

14.05.2014 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger's first match after the birth of Leo and Lenny unfortunately did not end in a victory. Our champ was defeated in the second round of the Rome Masters 6-1, 3-6, 6-7(6) by Jeremy Chardy today.

Roger easily won the first set in just 24 minutes, but committed a total of 20 unforced errors in the second set - giving the Frenchman too much room to take the set. In the tie-breaker of the deciding set, Roger again battled with some errors and finally went on to lose the match.

but Nadal played exceptionally well that evening after having nearly lost to Murray and before that to Simon. A bit strange in a way, but Dimitrov doesn't seen to have quite the power he needs. I feel the men's tour is on the cusp of change but not quite there. I would like Dominic Thiem to go along way, but he meets Nadal in second round if he gets through the first - also tough.

For once Roger does have a fairly decent draw - not that all draws at slams are not very tough. It is difficult not to see yet another Nole/Rafa final, dreary as that would be, because each is DESPERATE to win. My guess is Roger's motivation is to peak at Wimbledon (I could be wrong) but of course he'll be keen to do well and, for instance beat Gulbis and Berdych both of whom have had wins against him. Grigor's poor showing against Nadal in Rome was disappointing

Roger: Good Draw but a really though first round with a strong hitter. Then a qualifier is always tricky because you might not know him. After that all the players are difficult but you can defeat them all if you hit the ball hard, go consciosully to the net and make the needed approaches. Train hard these next few days, no less than 3 hours per day in order to be a hundrer per cent ready. You can square off the defeat of USO 2012 with Berdych and RG 2012 with Djoko and then destroy rafa.Champ

Also, something tells me Nadal won't reach the final this year. Hope I'm right

If everything goes as expected, Djoker should reach semis. But I do believe Roger will have chances against him. It all depends on how he gets to the the semifinal stage.
If he takes it round by round building on his confidence as the tournament gets in its final stages, there shouldn't be a reason why he can't win the slam. IMO the key will be in the early rounds, if he holds up well and reaches QF with no major hurdles, he will definitely be a threat to djoker.
