Roger wins in Cincinnati

14.08.2014 | Tennis, Starseite 1

Roger has successfully started his quest for a sixth title at the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati. He defeated Vasek Pospisil (ATP 46) 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-2.

Our champion had to work hard for the victory. He admitted a break late in the second set and then fortunately managed to come back strong in the decider, clearly winning the set and the match after over two hours of play. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Roger's opponent in last Sunday's final, has already been eliminated. Roger said: "It doesn't help to see this happening. I am always afraid of the first round."

Roger will now meet Gaël Monfils (ATP 23) or Bautista Agut (ATP 18).

All the best Roger!! Win in straight set please to conserve some energy!! I know Andy's defensive style will not be east to play against!

The amazing thing is as Toronto and Cincy are so close together, Roger is having to acclimatise to the conditions in his matches. I am concerned though that once again he has the evening draws, so when (when, of course, not if!) he gets to the final he will be suddenly in a daytime match after back to back evenings, and he is doing three setters as well. It is tough for him. Stan, in contrast, seems to be getting the 11am slot everyday which is to his favour I would imagine.

I'm sorry CPISCEAN. What a painful thing to do and with such an exciting match as well! Not trying to rub it in, but I have just finished watching my recording. It was an exciting match, I am glad I knew the results first, but I do not think I would have doubted The eventual result. I got the impression he was improving on his game in many ways, still making some errors, but getting more on target. Monfils is such an amazing returner and shot maker himself. Roger's net play is amazing now.
