A convincing start

08.05.2007 | Tennis

Roger began his bid for a first Rome Masters title with a 6-3 6-4 victory over Nicolas Almagro today.

"I think it was a good performance. Nicolas is a good player, especially on clay, and the first round is always difficult. I hope I can play even better in the second round," he commented.

Roger won with minimum effort, raising his game to break the Spaniard in his opening service game and then again in the first game of the second set. He clearly dominated the match – a fact that is underlined with the 66-54 statistic winners-statistic. Roger never lost his own serve and only faced one break ball, but had five of them himself.

Our star will enjoy a day off on Wednesday and will meet either Filippo Volandri oder Richard Gasquet in the next round.

Yesterday, Roger met Rafael Nadal in doubles for the first time. Nadal teamed with Carlos Moya and Roger played with his Davis Cup teammate Stanislas Wawrinka - Nadal/Moya took home the match 6-4, 7-6 (5) in the first round of the Rome Masters.

Dear Fairweather fans,

it is YOU who disappoint us. Please get off the bandwagon if you are not a sincere fan. Everybody goes through tough times and Roger is off his rhythm a little bit. He has still done nothing but be a great sportsman and champion.

Hi Roger,

Feel sorry for that loss. The less we can say is that you don't find the good timing. I truly hope you wouldn't loose your pleasure to play ;) otherwise I risk to loose mine to watch your symphonical play.

I also hope your relationship wit

I think you underestimate the opponent VOlandria so you went to meet Scocer Star and took pictures and had fun yesterday instead of focusing on your opponent. Nicely done! You got an award today by barely holding 1 game in 1st set and barely holding 4

From a convincing start to a devastating loss against an unknowned Volandri. however; he is famous now since he beat the world's #1.

Roger, let's hope for a better Hamburg AMS. Go Roger~~~

Roger, your fans are so concerned about you. We do not ask that you get personal, but could you at least tell us whether you are feeling well? Are your soaring back-to-back losses beginning to nibble away at your motivation? Please help us understand. We

Dear Roger. You said after losing to Volandri that you needed to get onto the practice courts. Perhaps you are letting too much desire to win on clay to overcome your natural instincts? You are the greatest player in the world. Go with your natural flow,
