A convincing start

08.05.2007 | Tennis

Roger began his bid for a first Rome Masters title with a 6-3 6-4 victory over Nicolas Almagro today.

"I think it was a good performance. Nicolas is a good player, especially on clay, and the first round is always difficult. I hope I can play even better in the second round," he commented.

Roger won with minimum effort, raising his game to break the Spaniard in his opening service game and then again in the first game of the second set. He clearly dominated the match – a fact that is underlined with the 66-54 statistic winners-statistic. Roger never lost his own serve and only faced one break ball, but had five of them himself.

Our star will enjoy a day off on Wednesday and will meet either Filippo Volandri oder Richard Gasquet in the next round.

Yesterday, Roger met Rafael Nadal in doubles for the first time. Nadal teamed with Carlos Moya and Roger played with his Davis Cup teammate Stanislas Wawrinka - Nadal/Moya took home the match 6-4, 7-6 (5) in the first round of the Rome Masters.

How do you unsubscribe from being a fan?
I no longer want to be a fan of RF. He's a looser and I support winners. Well done for what he has achieved but I'd rather leave now before the ship has finally sunk. Anyone who thinks he can win at RG is living i

Hi Roger,
Your so-called fans disappoint me: how can they say those horrible things about you? Pure praise in victory, pure critics in defeat. Now they hate you? Please!! You're not a robot, just a very gifted tennis player. The guy on the other side of

Hello Roger, I think you should change your shirt because you are not luck playing with it. Try, maybe you can return to play well as you know.
God bless you, your fan

A FAN should be there to support in good times and bad, NOT to kick when down.
Power of positive thinking!!!

Your loss to Volandri is no surprise. These "rests" are the problem. After winning Morocco, Nadal played Barcellona -- where were you? We all know there is no better practice than match play. Now your "rests" are becoming forced instead of

Dear Roger,

You seemed overly confused and unmotivated today. I hope you're ok. You could have played better today, but your opponent also played really good. He served to your backhand and then made you run a lot. I hope you'll fell better at the end

Well, Roger, what can I say.
You know that you lose, he didn’t win.
It is not your time?-
I don’t know what are you doing?
I see that you are so popular, you win a lot of awards, and you have a lot of social life.
But you are not focus in the tennis
