Shock defeat in Rome

10.05.2007 | Tennis

Unfortunately, Roger has already dropped out of the Masters-Series tournament in Rome. He lost to Italy’s Filippo Volandri (ATP 53) 6-2, 6-4 in just 78 minutes today.

"I don't know what's wrong. I have to analyze it myself," Roger said. "It was over too soon for me today." These last weeks have been the worst stretch of his career since becoming No. 1 in Feb. 2004. Roger often missed routine baseline shots and his body language conveyed little will to compete. He hit only two winners with his forehand, normally his best shot, and made 44 unforced errors to Volandri's 23.

Roger arrived in Rome more than a week before the tournament started to step up his clay-court training. "I was the first player to arrive. My preparation was perfect," he said. "But let's not forget that Filippo played well today. Give the guy credit."

Our star now has the Hamburg Masters before the clay courts of Roland Garros in Paris. "Of course I've got to sit down and look at what went wrong, but it's not the end of the world? I've now got more time to train for Hamburg," he said.

Hi Roger,
I was sorry to hear about your split with Tony Roche, you guys make a great pair. I just want to say I don't think change is always good, but I do believe that good choices do shape our lives profoundly. I know you both will be fine.... Just re

Roger, did you put too much pressure on yourself in Rome and other tournaments on clay? be more relaxed, enjoy the games as usual.it is clear that you are the best now, what are you afraid of??? now, you may be a bit down, you can try to have some changes

Good Morning Roger Federer,
It is said the wise learn even when they lose. This is just a learning period for you.
But I feel the Red Color T-Shirt does not suits you. Red probably should be avoided when u play. (Just a suggestion)

Dearest Roger,
The spare time you are looking through all these messages could be used to practice. Get going and believe in yourself!!!

Dear Roger,
my two cents on your mini-slump, as the Los Angeles Times called it. I admired your down to earth humility when I read your blog from Tokyo (I think), in which you said you took nothing for granted, and you felt lucky every day you were able

Dear Roger,
Such things often happen when you are living a LIFE. I don't know whether you will be reading thismessage or not but please focus on three things. Answer if you are playing the way you really want to! Focus on possibility, nothing is impossib
