Roger marches on

06.07.2007 | Tennis

Roger put on an amazing showing against and Juan Carlos Ferrero in difficult conditions on centre court this afternoon before our world no.1 emerged victorious 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-1 6-3.

Roger’s comment: "It was really, really tough conditions, very gusty wind, so I'm happy to come through it. OK, a set is lost but the match isn't lost. I'm happy with my game, it's my first match of the second week and we'll see what happens. The pressure is always the same as defending champion at Wimbledon."

After play having been suspended on Friday due to rain, Roger resumed serving at a tricky 5-5, 40-40 but came through the game and raced through the resulting tie breaker 7-2 to take the first set. Ferrero fought back, however, and broke Roger in the seventh game of the second to shock the crowd and the top seed 6-3.

Thoughts of an upset did not last long, though, as Roger stepped it up and lost just four more games en route to a semi-final showdown with Andy Roddick or Richard Gasquet.

Dear Bonzie,

Most of the errors probably happened in the first and second sets. He had 15 aces and the third set took only 19 minutes. He had a wonderful winning percent on his first serve - 81% and the second serve percentage was not bad either.

At just 21, Gasquet and the other semi-finalists, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, make Federer the old man of the tournament’s survivors, at the age of 25. Rafa and Novak are 21 and 20 respectively, not that that prevents them from being old adversaries.

Dear Lottie,

I saw the adds on NBC. They take over from ESPN at noon here. I have no idea if you can see Wimbledon on NBC in Spain.

Well done young man. You were battling more than a worthy opponent today. The lack of match play, the wind, and the condition of the court were all factors today. You handled it all with confidence and strong will. Best of luck against another tough o

Congratulations for the win today and best wishes for tomorrow against Richard Gasquet. I never expected him to be your opponent and was worried about Roddick, especially the way he was playing. What a turn of events and hope it turns out in your favour.
