Successful birthday

08.08.2007 | Tennis

Roger has won his first match in Montreal, defeating Croatia's Ivo Karlovic (ATP 34) in the tie-break in both sets.

The result might look like the match was rather tight, but Roger did in fact not face any major problems during his first appearance after his fifth Wimbledon title in series. He only lost a total of seven points on his own serve and won the tie-breaks clearly 7-2 and 7-3 on his 26th birthday today. Roger has now won all three encounters against the Croatian; the former two having taken place in Gstaad and Wimbledon.

Our star's opponent in the next round is Fabio Fognini (ATP 137). The Italian surprisingly defeated Britain's Andy Murray 6-2, 6-2.

Congratulartions Roger for a nice win on your birthday. Your serving was awesome, and you (mini)broke him when it counted. It's never easy against these big-serving machines. So, now just 4 matches to go...
Kindest regards,
Luisg

Congratulations, Roger. You played calm and collected. There was grace in your play. I was worried not so much about your opponent as about the wind, but you handled the challenge very well.

Good luck with today's match with Fognini.

We thought you looked great out there. Some described you as "struggling" but we would have called it "exasperated." When someone is lobbing artillery shells at you the whole game, it's sort of boring to play. But your service game was excellent too. No

You played beautifully and I enjoyed watching it. And what a wonderful celebration on court -- I wish I could be there to sing along (in English, since I don't speak French).

Can't wait to see you again tonight (Hong Kong time). All the best in all
