Roger breezes into the next round

16.08.2007 | Tennis

Roger made a smooth start to his Cincinnati Masters title bid by beating Frenchman Julien Benneteau 6-3 6-3. With this victory, he has already advanced one round further than a year ago.

An early break put Roger, looking for his 50th career title, on his way and after taking the first set, he broke in the seventh and ninth games of the second to clinch victory. He will next play Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, who beat Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela 6-7 6-4 6-2, in the third round.

"It gives you a fright when you see some people retiring and others, like Djokovic, who had the tournament of his life last week, losing quite comfortably," Roger said in a courtside interview. "It puts extra pressure on you so I'm happy I am the one to survive." Rafael Nadal was forced to retire on Wednesday.

Dear Roger,

Congratulations on your win against Baghdatis. Both of you did really well having to come and and play in such high temperatures. Good luck against Almagro. Take care.

Love From Christinex

Nice going -- your win over Marcus B. It is so hot where I live, equally hot where you were playing your match today. But you hung in there. I hope you are pleased with your mental toughness.

Congratulations Roger on your victory against a nice, worthy opponent in Marcos. I felt for all the players having to play in that terrible muggy heat today. Enjoy a long cool soak and plenty of iced drinks. Take care and best wishes.

Hi Roger,

Congrats on winning in Cincy: just saw you beat Marcos in straight sets too! It must be as hot as in a Finnish sauna to play there, so keep that hydration on hand :)
All in all, thought you are playing fairly well.
Hope to see you win the

Bravo Roger!!! It was difficult but you won it in straight sets.
The conditions there are nothing like those 'perfect tennis days' of Toronto. We usually don't see you breaking out a sweat like that... my goodness. Well, have a rest and come out deter
