Roger breezes into the next round

16.08.2007 | Tennis

Roger made a smooth start to his Cincinnati Masters title bid by beating Frenchman Julien Benneteau 6-3 6-3. With this victory, he has already advanced one round further than a year ago.

An early break put Roger, looking for his 50th career title, on his way and after taking the first set, he broke in the seventh and ninth games of the second to clinch victory. He will next play Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, who beat Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela 6-7 6-4 6-2, in the third round.

"It gives you a fright when you see some people retiring and others, like Djokovic, who had the tournament of his life last week, losing quite comfortably," Roger said in a courtside interview. "It puts extra pressure on you so I'm happy I am the one to survive." Rafael Nadal was forced to retire on Wednesday.

Nice work, Roger. I really like the black shirt. Please continue to wear it in Cincy and think about bringing it back for the US Open.

Roger, what I love about you is that you play exceptionally well but do not overplay. That's why just when Nadal is winding down, you're still winding up. I hope this carries on for years to come. Win in Cincy and you are on course to end the year as numb

You looked so determined and focused in this match. It was a thing of beauty to watch. You were like a ballet dancer at there at times. I loved it. Keep up the great play.

I love the black/white combination, too!! Such a man of class and style.

I should say that the outfit in the last Wimby was really elegant. Only YOU could get away with that - all white shirt/vest and trousers get up!! WOnderful!!

Well done champ! While the other top players bow out you carry on winning. You may have lost in the final last week but you are number 1 cos you are the most consistant and some of your fans who chose to write you off should remember that. If you play jus

Dear Roger,
Enjoyed your match very much, there's something magic about those hot, summer night matches, they seem almost electric. Best of luck against Baghdatis.

Roger, I think you have torn the page out of the book on "how to measure greatness"
