50th tournament title!

20.08.2007 | Tennis

Roger now has a special number of his own — 50. He reached another measure of tennis greatness on Sunday, winning his 50th tournament title by beating American James Blake 6-1, 6-4 in the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters in Mason, Ohio.

At 26 Roger became the fifth-youngest player in history to reach 50, and only the ninth overall in the Open Era — since 1968 — to win so many tournaments.

“It’s not a goal I set for myself in my career, but it’s definitely a nice number to get to, especially in terms of titles,” Roger said. “It’s really a lot, you know, so it’s great.”

There could be a lot more to come. Given the way he played on Sunday, nobody would be surprised if next week’s U.S. Open winds up being 51. The higher the stakes, the better he plays. Go, Roger!

What I love about Roger is how gracious he is towards his opponent after each win. He said beating Blake "looked easy but it was actually quite hard because Blake played really well." Not from where I sat! Roger steamrolled over James, more like. Also, th
