In straight sets!

06.09.2007 | Tennis

Roger won his quarter final against Andy Roddick in straight sets. His 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory sends him against Russia's Nikolay Davydenko on Saturday and places him just two victories from becoming the first man to win four consecutive U.S. Opens since Bill Tilden won six straight from 1920 to 1925.

"There was so much good serving that it's hard to say it was great, great tennis," Roger said. "But I thought it was a high level. You couldn't allow yourself to make any easy mistakes because they would be costly."

The first two sets featured sizzling skill from the service line as neither player lost a game on his own delivery and both sets went to tiebreaks. Roger won the first 7-5 and the second 7-4 against the American he defeted in last year's final. Our top seed then claimed the first service break of the high intensity match in the sixth game of the third set when Roddick sailed a backhand long to fall behind 4-2. Roger broke Roddick again for good measure in the last game when the American netted a backhand on match point to end the contest after just over two hours.

Not since 1988 had no U.S. man failed to reach the final of any of the season's four Slams. Andre Agassi, Michael Chang, Jim Courier, Pete Sampras, Todd Martin, Mal Washington and Roddick himself had reached finished runner-up or won majors during the 18 years preceding 2007.

Roger holds a 9-0 lifetime edge on Davydenko.

Congrats Roger Federer! As usual, a masterful performance.

BTW, I was googling for "Federer" news, and one of the search items pointed to an eonline article:
