"Worst Conditions Ever"

30.08.2004 | Tennis

Roger defeated Andre Agassi in very difficult conditions in New York 6:3, 2:6, 7:5, 3:6, 6:3. It was a great performance as Roger was tested in a large variety of ways. The match had been interrupted due to rain on Wednesday. During the continuation on Thursday afternoon hurricane-like winds blew over the stadium. “It was extremely difficult” said Roger, “the worst conditions I have ever played in.” The windy conditions even helped Roger in the eighth game of the fifth set: a lob just managed to land on the court, provoking two unforced errors by Agassi, Roger then making the break to the decisive 5:3 lead. Even though the conditions opened made luck a part of the game Roger merited the victory. It was especially in the last set that he dominated with his serve. He only needed his second serve five times (!!) during the entire set. “I tried not to make any errors. I played like I usually do during warm-up. But it was the right recipe.” His next opponent in the semi final will be Britain’s Tim Henman (ATP 5) on Saturday. Henman defeated Dominik Hrbaty (Skl/ATP 22) 6:1, 7:5, 5:7, 6:2. Roger has only won two of eight direct encounters against henman; Roger claimed the last one in the final of Indian Wells 6:3, 6:3.
