10th consecutive Grand Slam final
Roger advanced to his record 10th consecutive Grand Slam final Saturday with a 7-5, 6-1, 7-5 victory over No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko at the US Open.
Our star improved his career record to 10-0 against the Russian and he will take a 26-match US Open winning streak into his fourth straight final against No. 3 Novak Djokovic, who beat No. 15 David Ferrer 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. Roger is trying to become the first player since Bill Tilden to win at least four straight US titles. Tilden captured six consecutive from 1920-25.
By reaching the final, Roger is one win away from tying Ivan Lendl's Open Era mark of 27 straight match wins from 1985-88. He is 11-2 in Grand Slam finals, losing only to rival Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros the last two years. He will attempt to move into second place with Roy Emerson on the all-time Grand Slam titles list and move within two of leader Pete Sampras.
Roger will be appearing in his sixth consecutive final (and ninth of the season) since a third round loss to Filippo Volandri at ATP Masters Series Rome on May 10. He is 5-3 in finals this year. He is 4-1 lifetime against Djokovic although he lost the last meeting in a third set tie-break in the Rogers Masters final in Montreal on Aug. 12. Roger has a 50-16 career record in finals and the only player to beat him more than once in a final is Nadal. The Spaniard has beaten Roger six times in a final (8-5 overall). Roger is also 14-2 in his career in North American finals.
