12th Grand Slam title!

10.09.2007 | Tennis

Roger won his fourth consecutive US Open championship and 12th overall Grand Slam title today! He defeated Novak Djokovic 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 at the National Tennis Center in New York and is now only two Grand Slam titles short of Pete Sampras's all-time record.

"Of course it's great to have been able to capture this title once again. I was rather nervous before the final and I know that Novak plays excellent tennis," Roger said after his victory. "It is the largest stadium in the world and also the hardest to win in. Right now I'm just glad it's over and I can party with my team, go to bed and rest for a few days."

The 20-year-old Djokovic, appearing in the final of a major for the first time, was unable to convert seven set points over the first two sets. Roger won the title on his second match point.

Roger is the first man to win four straight US Open titles since professional players were admitted to the tournament in 1968, the start of the Open Era. Bill Tilden won the event six years in a row from 1920-25.

Enjoy the party, Roger!

Hi Rog,
Apart from being my namesake, and of course also close to my home country (SA), I'd like to echo what a few other members have said here, and that is I dont think you really know what impact you have on people in all walks of life. Then again, ma

Great job done Roger! Don't get too obsessed over Sampras's record - it will come in good time. Good luck for the rest of the year and everything is crossed for the Slams next year (especially Wimbledon and Roland Garros).

As ever, you are the man - 12 Grand Slams, and top of the ATP Tour Race again. What was even more impressive about your victory was that you achieved it without playing at your peak. Congratulations, Roger - rest well, knowing you are the greatest player
