Open 500-status for Basel

Roger welcomed the announcement today that the tournament in Basel will receive “Open 500”-status in the ATP calendar as of 2009.
"This is fantastic news for the ATP Tour and I am delighted in particular that my hometown Basel has been awarded "500" status for 2009. The ATP is making some exciting changes to ensure the sport continues to grow on a global level."
The “500” category, consisting of ten tournaments (five of which in Europe), will be the third level after the four Grand Slams and the eight planned Masters Series tournaments (hitherto nine).
