First title in 2008

20.04.2008 | Tennis

Roger began his clay season with success as he won his first title of 2008 with a 7-6 (7-5), 1-2 victory as Nikolay Davydenko retired injured at the Estoril Open on Sunday. Our star improved his record against the world number four Russian to a perfect 12-0 as he won only their third encounter on clay.

"It's great to win a title, it's fantastic," said Roger. "This will give me great confidence for the rest of the season having won my first clay tournament of the year."

The victory was his seventh on the surface and was obtained in challenging, blustery conditions."These were the most difficult of the week," said the Swiss holder of 12 Grand Slam titles. "It was cold as well as windy. This is not the best way to win a match and I'm sorry for Nikolay. But sometimes these things happen."

Dear Roger,

So happy for you over your win at Estoril...keep up the good work! There was no 'live telecast" in Kuala Lumpur for this whole tournament and I had to watch you play 'live' on my puter but it was worth all the "pain" on the back Ouch..heh

++Sparrock, what are you talking about? The "Bye" is what top players get at many tournaments: they don't have to play the first round. Check the draws, and you will see that this is the casel
As for Davydenko, he plays so many tournaments, and he has

I have to agree with Margaret the registered nurse. None of us should be diagnosing what the bump on roger's face is caused from. What do we know anyway?Whatever it is it will go away in time and who cares what it was in the 1st place. I know we all love

Dearest Roger,

Congratulations on your first title of 2008! It was wonderful to see you grinning and spraying that champagne. ^^ Too bad this was not the best way to win the title, but at least you did win a tight first set. Best wishes for Monte Ca
