Roger Federer wins Estoril Open title (Telegraph)

Roger Federer broke his title drought and won his first of the season by clinching the Estoril Open with a 7-6 (7/5), 1-2 win over Nikolay Davydenko.

The world No 1, who suffered glandular fever before the Australian Open, broke his title duck after Russian world No 4 Davydenko was forced to retire in the second set with a leg injury.Federer has not won a title since November at the Masters Cup in Shanghai where he took the 54th title of his career.

He now travels to the Monte Carlo Masters after ending Davydenko's winning streak of 11 matches, a run which included the prestigious Miami Masters title.

Federer's win came after working for the first time this week with Spanish coach Jose Higueras, a clay court specialist.

Roger Federer's title drought is over.

The world's top-ranked player won his first title of the year yesterday at the Estoril Open when Nikolay Davydenko retired in the second set with a leg injury.

In what had been a competitive match, Federer won the first set, 7-6 (5). The Swiss superstar saved two set points, then was able to close things out in the set after squandering a 5-0 lead in the tiebreaker.

The second-seeded Davydenko converted an early break and was up 2-1 in the second set when he was forced to the sidelines.

While some of the luster of the title is lost with the 2003 champion unable to complete the match, Federer still claimed his 54th career singles title. "It would have been nice for Nikolay to finish. I think it's the first time in my life that someone has retired against me in 70-80 finals," Federer said.

Fed shrugs off monkey (Herald Sun)

Roger Federer won the Estoril Open in Portugal yesterday after second seed Nikolay Davydenko retired with a leg injury when trailing 7-6 (7-5) 1-2. It was Federer's first title of the season.

Davydenko broke Federer to start the second set before pulling out of the match. "I have a little injury and I can't finish the match," Davydenko told the crowd. "I'm sorry, guys." Federer returned to his winning ways in his fifth tournament this season. It has been eight years since Federer needed this many events to reach a final. "It's not the way you want to win a tournament, but that's just the way it goes sometime," Federer said yesterday.

"It's great to win a title again, and to straight away win my first claycourt tournament of the season gives me great confidence going into Monte Carlo."

Roger Federer took his first tournament title this year when Nikolay Davydenko quit with a leg injury midway through their clay-court final at Portugal's Estoril Open.

Federer, the world's No. 1-ranked tennis player, led 7-6 (7-5), 1-2 when Davydenko, ranked fourth, halted the match, giving Federer his 54th career ATP Tour title.

Federer, a 12-time Grand Slam champion, last won a title at November's Masters Cup in Shanghai. He lost to Novak Djokovic in the semifinals of January's Australian Open; to Andy Murray at the Dubai Open in March, his first opening-round loss since 2004; to Mardy Fish in the semifinals in Indian Wells, California; and to Andy Roddick at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.

Days after the Dubai loss, Federer told the New York Times that since December he had been battling mononucleosis, an infection that can produce flu-like symptoms and extreme, lingering fatigue.

The clay-court season culminates at the May 26-June 8 French Open, the only major championship Federer has failed to capture. Federer recently hired Jose Higueras, a former clay- court specialist, as his coach.

Roger was down 2 sets in a 5 set match. The score of the 3rd set was 4-0, with 4 games to his opponent. Roger f

Ginger Girl.

I disagree.. it is NOT ok if he loses next time.
It is "ok" if he's in the semi finals. Before it is just not good enough for Federer.
