Roger unable to beat Rafa on clay

27.04.2008 | Tennis

Today’s finalists of the Monte Carlo Masters were identical to 2006 and 2007: Roger met his closest rival in the rankings, Rafael Nadal. Unfortunately Roger was once again unable to steal the title from the Spaniard, losing 5-7, 5-7.

“It seems to be the same here every year. But I have to be satisfied with my performance as I was almost eliminated early in the tournament,” Roger said. He had narrowly escaped a defeat from Spain’s Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo.

After a series of breaks and re-breaks in the first set Roger came into the second all guns blazing, attacking the net and managing to hold serve after breaking in the first game. He made his point clearer by breaking to love in the third and by the end of the fourth game had allowed his opponent only four points. However, Nadal did not give up and as Roger’s level of play declined he won the next five games. Our star managed to level at 5-5 but Nadal wrapped it up after one hour and 43 minutes when Roger sent a backhand long, his 44th unforced error.

It is Nadal’s 24th career-title and his 19th on clay. This had only been achieved in the years 1911 to 1914 by New Zealand’s Anthony Wilding.

Next up for Roger is the “Internazionali BNL d'Italia” in Rome, starting on May 5th.

I did research for any article on Rafa's bandages of his left shoulder, I found nothing so we have to speculate that it is a preventive measure as for the bandages on his knees. Good!!! We want Roger to win against a Rafa in 100% of his fitness. Rafa will

Hi again Fedex100,

I totally agree with everything you say in your last post on Djoko, Rafa and the expected media response if Roger wins RG while Rafa is not in the final or wounded.

Thanks JEUX-SET-MATCH for the news on Tsonga. Very happy that he will play in Rome.
I hope we will see more and more of him. It is a pleasure to have him around.
May he find back his winning ways (as in AO)!

Hi Fedex100 and other fans,

About Rafa saying that, due to his huge workload, he could conceivably fail in his repeat quest for four tournament title defenses: it seems to me that Rafa should have skipped the Barcelona tournament this year to reduce hi

Thank you Tilou. This video is priceless. I love the commentators'views of Djoko's elucubrations. Nadal's reaction is so funny!
From this article it seems that Tsonga will play in Rome.

Hi fans,

Here is something quite funny to watch. I found on Tennisplanet today this video showing Djokovic claiming that (although he retired and was losing the match) he was in control of the match against Rafa in RG 2006. Rafa’s reaction is pricele
