Roger teams up with Mercedes-Benz

28.04.2008 | Off Court

April 28, 2008, Beijing – Mercedes-Benz China Ltd. announced today that they have entered into a multi-year advertising and strategic marketing partnership with Roger Federer. As a component of this partnership, Roger Federer will join “Swing for the Stars” – a Junior Tennis Development Program launched by Mercedes-Benz in cooperation with the China Tennis Association (CTA). “Its exciting to work with a top brand like Mercedes-Benz in China. I look forward to helping them grow their business while increasing the popularity of tennis in China,” said Federer.

Federer has held the No.1 post of the World Men’s Tennis Single since 2004. During his tennis career, he has won 54 titles including twelve Grand Slam singles, four Tennis Masters Cup, and fourteen ATP Masters Series titles. In 2008, he was named Laureus World Sportsman of the Year for a record fourth consecutive time. Considered by many as perhaps one of the greatest players of all time, he has been consistently involved in various charitable causes throughout the years. He established the Roger Federer Foundation in 2003, whose main goal is to promote sports and education for young people. Federer was also appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2006 to support impoverished children worldwide.

The world No.1 tennis player was fascinated with tennis from a very young age. He hit his first tennis ball over the net at the age of three in the local tennis club, presenting a tremendous talent for tennis. When he was 14, he was sent to the Swiss National Tennis Center for intensive tennis training. The Center’s training conditions and qualified coaches played a central role in Federer’s career. The same year, he became the national champion of all groups in Switzerland. Before he started his professional career in 1998, he finished the year as the #1 ranked junior in the world and was recognized as the ITF World Junior Tennis champion of that year.

Mercedes-Benz “Swing for the Stars” Junior Tennis Development Program is designed to improve Chinese junior players’ skills and the coaches’ teaching level, so as to develop and prepare skilled and well-trained backbone players to improve Chinese tennis in the future. Roger Federer will also join the Mercedes-Benz ‘Swing for the Stars’ Junior Tennis Development Program.

“Roger is an extraordinary tennis player and a fantastic role model. We are happy and proud to have him represent our brand as well as be involved in our program. Roger's resolute will for winning and success is what Mercedes-Benz has pursued for many years, sharing also the same vision with Mercedes-Benz on junior tennis training programs. It is these common features that promote the collaboration between Roger and Mercedes-Benz,” said Klaus Maier, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz China.

Dear Roger,
It saddens me greatly and surprises me as well to see how your compatriots are reacting to your new partnership with Mercedes-Benz.

What you do is your business and yours alone and the "righteous" have no right to criticize you like that
