A solid start

26.05.2008 | Tennis

Roger started his French Open campaign convincingly today with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 victory over American Sam Querrey.

"It's always difficult in the first round at Grand Slams," Roger said. "I'm relieved and I'm looking forward to the second round."

Roger will now face Albert Montanes of Spain or Belgium's Kristof Vliegen for a place in the third round as he seeks to complete a career Grand Slam. He was rarely troubled in his opening match, facing a break in the first set but recording two breaks of his own against the Querrey delivery to move a set up.

He then showed solid tennis with some occasional brilliant shots and was able to wrap up the victory in just over an hour and a half.

Hi TonyN,
I'm just now signing on. Thanks again for your very insightful post about Djoko etc. Of course, many journalists do not bother to dig further to get the real stories behind the news. I remember in one article, a cursory mention was made of D

I was going to say:
allow yourself to be mad, after you've been up 4-0, and Nadal stole the set. Doesn't matter if it's Nadal, you should be mad just like you were mad after this first set. You have the right to be mad, even wi

I only saw the end of the 4th set after I got home from work, but from the commentators comments (BBC interactive) it sounds like the 2nd and 3rd sets were a masterclass. Must watch the highlights. Well done Roger keep going. Love you --- Ali x
