Through to semis in four

04.06.2008 | Tennis

Roger rallied to defeat Fernando Gonzalez (CHI/ATP 25) 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 and reach the semi final at his 16th consecutive Grand Slam event.

"There was a lot of pressure, he was hitting the corners and I didn't know exactly how I needed to play him," said Roger. "It's never easy against him, but I played a good match."

Roger had played a very shaky opening set, missing several easy shots while Gonzalez, using his powerful forehand but also making some surprising backhands down the line, took the lead. Our star, however, righted the ship in the second stanza and ultimately cruised to victory, with the help of 11 aces and five breaks.

Roger will play on Friday against the winner from Spanish fifth seed David Ferrer and flamboyant Gaël Monfils, final Frenchman in the home field.

Hi Roger,

Monfils made it very tough out there today, I have no finger nails left. Just play as well as you can Sunday that is all you can do. Nadal is beatable but you will have to concentrate, I wish you the very best of luck. Much love Ali x

He WON! Thank God! It was bizarre. But he came through and thats all that matters right now. Maybe this will even make Nadal complacent, who knows. Sunday is another day and Roger sure can win this title. He has it in him and Lord knows he deserves it.

Congratulations Roger!

This was a tough one against the Frenchman! That is OK, the crowd was happy, their man got one set. How nice of you! The public was with Monfils but they were respectful of you. On Sunday, you will be again “le chouchou des F

***JEUX-SET-MATCH***Absolument avec tout mon coeur. Do you agree that the wind played a role and that Roger wasn't having a lot of fun? Or do you think the French crowd got to him a little?

Great win Federer.
Your win against Monfils today shows your grit and determination.
Its not about losing a set or the match being even in the fourth set.
Its your consistency and your nerves of steel which saw you through.
Play with the same confiden

JSM I agree with you, it was better that he had a hard fought match today than experiencing it on Sunday with Nadal. He can't play like this at all on Sunday if he wants to win the French Open. Nadal won't be sprawling on the ground like Monfils and he wi

Pokah! Good win; glad he is in the finals; he'll need his talent, luck & determination to win the final -- it will be a 4 setter, and I think it's going to be Nadal again; unless Fed does something extraordinary. I think this is his year to make or break.
