Roger right on track

27.06.2008 | Tennis

Roger was at his irresistible best today as he eased past Frenchman Marc Gicquel in straight sets in the first match on Centre Court: 6-3, 6-3, 6-1.

"The conditions were difficult again against a tricky opponent who played very aggressively," Roger said. "The wind was swirling and I got down a break early and had to rally back but I think I played really well. Not losing a set (so far) is always nice and I get a couple of days off now and hopefully I will play as well again next week."

Our champ looked to have been caught cold after a 90-minute rain delay as he lost his serve in the opening game of the match, but instantly broke back to level the score. Gicquel, the world number 53, was not initially overawed by the occasion and saved a break point in the fourth game, but eventually the unforced errors mounted as Roger also began to find his rhythm, looking capable of raising his game whenever required and wrapped up the victory in 81 minutes.

Roger will take on Lleyton Hewitt - holder of the title in Wimbledon before Roger took over the crown - in the fourth round on “Marvelous Monday”.

I have to say that Murry would be a tougher opponent than Gasquet for Nadal.

And Wawa broke back and is now taking control of Safin.

Gasquet has the first set!

You are right. Maybe Nadal cannot slide and glide on the grass as he can on clay. I saw him fall a couple of time. On Saturday? My memory is fading, thinking about Roger.

Yes Safin is dangerous. Seems to be inspired by his sister's recent rise. Better him rising than Djoko, any day!

I hope Murray or Gasquet can do some damage in the QF. Murray has already talked about wanting to be in the final and not just the QF, so m

Glad to see that the only remaining Serbian, Tipsarevic is gone, and Murray has just lost the first set to Gasquet. I want Gasquest to beat Murray, he is a better contender to Nadal. He won't give up just like Youhzny did. Go Gasquet

-TriniMum127 (p27),

I agree with you. Hope nadal loses some points, so that the gap will become more.

But nadal is looking very GOOD.

Medical time-out in the second game is questionable. If the tapes were bothering him, he should have checked that before stepping on court. However this should not disrupt the opponent's game. Younzny was probably exhausted.
