18th grand slam semi-final in series!
Roger was a hard-fought quarterfinal winner today at the U.S. Open. He held off qualifier Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 7-6 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (5) in 2 hours 25 and will now play in his record 18th straight major semifinal!
Seeking his fifth consecutive U.S. Open title but his first grand slam crown of the year, Roger edged Muller 7-5 in the third-set tiebreak to win his 32nd consecutive match at Flushing Meadows. "It was really difficult today and Gilles has played fantastic tournament," Roger said in a courtside interview. "He was won more matches than all of us, and that is why a straight-sets win is the best result. I'm really happy with the way I pulled it out at the end because I thought it was going to four (sets)."
Roger's opponent in the last four will be either American favourite Andy Roddick or third-seeded Serb Novak Djokovic, who were scheduled to play their quarter-final on Thursday evening.
