Switzerland meets the US

23.09.2008 | Tennis

The Swiss Davis Cup team will play the United States in the first round of the 2009 Davis Cup competition (March 6-8, 2009).

The Swiss team gained promotion to the elite World Group last weekend after a one-year absence. The match in the US could feature the world's number one ranked doubles pair, the Bryan twins, against Roger Federer/Stanislas Wawrinka, who won gold in the doubles event at the Beijing Olympics.

The Swiss played three of the last ten encounters abroad, one of which - 2007 against the Czech Republic - they lost. The US team around Patrick McEnroe last won the Cup in 2007 and lost in this year's semi-final against Spain last weekend.

Severin Lüthi, the captain of the Swiss team, said it will be a difficult task against the USA, the 32-times-champion. "The Americans have a lot of strong singles players as well as the Bryan brothers, the leading doubles team in the world. But our team has chances against any other nation." Switzerland is the only team in the World Group next to the USA and Spain with two top-ten players.

The location of play is still open, but must be decided upon by December 16, 2008, according to the regulations of the International Tennis Federation.

The first round:

Argentina - Netherlands

Czech Republic - France

USA - Switzerland

Cratia - Chile

Sweden - Israel

Russia - Rumania

Germany - Austria

Spain - Serbia

COACH for ROGER FEDERER?

YES

1- RF needs a coach
2- Not always the best players are the best coaches but I believe that
RF’s coach should be an excellent tennis player, if possible an ex Nr 1
3- RF should hire a coach that has already coached a

I would never even attempt to try to tell Roger what he should be doing or what coach to have or anything else pertaining to his tennis career. Only Roger knows exactly what he wants and needs and what he will do and then he will do it. After all the ten

***MaryCorbin***

For some reason, you and I are so in sync with what's going on in the media. Anyone who says derogatory or badmouth our Roger is considered a "persona non grata" character for us. Truly, I get upset when I listen to Brad Gilbert, Dar

I tend to agree with marycorbin re. Cahill. I heard on American TV he was praising Nadal NO END during FO and pre and post Wimbledon. I had thought he was a reasonable guy till
