Switzerland meets the US

23.09.2008 | Tennis

The Swiss Davis Cup team will play the United States in the first round of the 2009 Davis Cup competition (March 6-8, 2009).

The Swiss team gained promotion to the elite World Group last weekend after a one-year absence. The match in the US could feature the world's number one ranked doubles pair, the Bryan twins, against Roger Federer/Stanislas Wawrinka, who won gold in the doubles event at the Beijing Olympics.

The Swiss played three of the last ten encounters abroad, one of which - 2007 against the Czech Republic - they lost. The US team around Patrick McEnroe last won the Cup in 2007 and lost in this year's semi-final against Spain last weekend.

Severin Lüthi, the captain of the Swiss team, said it will be a difficult task against the USA, the 32-times-champion. "The Americans have a lot of strong singles players as well as the Bryan brothers, the leading doubles team in the world. But our team has chances against any other nation." Switzerland is the only team in the World Group next to the USA and Spain with two top-ten players.

The location of play is still open, but must be decided upon by December 16, 2008, according to the regulations of the International Tennis Federation.

The first round:

Argentina - Netherlands

Czech Republic - France

USA - Switzerland

Cratia - Chile

Sweden - Israel

Russia - Rumania

Germany - Austria

Spain - Serbia

I really do not care about who's going to be federer's coatch.he is the one who get the best understanding of the game. i am not higuera's fan anymore, just because he is not on fed's side and that's it.
My name is flat-return.

Roger,

This news is SO exciting for me! We are retiring the end of November, and plan to do "whatever" from January to March, 2009.

You can bet we'll be at the Davis Cup match, wherever it is!!!!!

Proud to be a Roger Federer Fan,
Patricia
