Best performance in Basel so far
Roger beat Simone Bolelli of Italy 6-2, 6-3 this evening to reach the semifinals of the Swiss Indoors in Basel.
"I'm very satisfied by how it went," Roger said. "I tried to step up the pressure and so far that's worked well."
After rather stuttering performances in his first two matches this week, our world number two was in full control against Bolelli, breaking the Italian twice in the opening set. Following a further break in the second, Bolelli did well to save three match points on his serve at 5-2 but could do nothing more as Roger took the final game to love, ending the match with two aces and a service winner.
Roger will next play Feliciano Lopez of Spain, who beat fourth-seeded James Blake of the United States 6-4, 7-6 (4). Roger passed up three match points at 5-2 on Bolelli's serve, but served out a love game including two of his eight aces in the match.
