Roger was forced to work pretty hard as he eliminated spirited qualifier Takeo Suzuki today to move into the third round of the Australian Open. He had to call on some resolve to down the Japanese 6:3 6:4 and 6:4 in 113 minutes.


Suzuki won plenty applause from the crowd, having given them value they would not have been expecting. "I had to play a good match to win," Roger said on court after the match."Thanks to the way Takeo Suzuki played tonight, it was very entertaining and I am already looking forward to the next time I play him."



Roger posted a straight-set win in the first-round play at the Australian Open in. Roger, the defending champion in Melbourne, powered by Frenchman Fabrice Santoro 6:1, 6:1, 6:2 in the first round, making it his 22nd consecutive win since the Athens Olympics.


"Wimbledon last year was the first time I came back as defending champion," said Roger. "I did well and hopefully I can repeat it here."
