Semis against Djokovic

01.05.2009 | Tennis

Roger fended off a challenge from German qualifier Mischa Zverev at the Rome Masters today to secure a 7-6 (3), 6-2 victory. He will now meet defending champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.

"He was playing well I thought from the start. He served some good serves and that made it easy for him to hold in the beginning. It made it hard for me to get the break," said Roger.

Both players made a good start into the match, taking it all the way to the tie-break. Zverev took a fast 2-0 lead - but that was not to last. Roger played several fantastic points to secure the first set 7-3 in the tie-break. The second set was completely in Roger's hands, where our champ displayed tennis in perfection and marched to a 4-0 lead.

Roger has a 7-3 winning record against Djokovic, including victories in their only two previous encounters on clay at Monte Carlo in 2006 and 2008.

Well it is sickening but Federer must study the way not to lose in the 2nd and 3rd sets - somehow to keep his strength up and not let these guys take over after a good start. At least he made the SF this time.

relax -- it's ok if Fed doesn't win -- I mean,it is his life isn't it? He doesn't have to retire if he loses a match does he? So take it easy -- and hopefully he will get to the finals at RG.

I never thought I would be congratulating Djoker for a job well done. Honestly, he deserved to win because he showed that he was hungry for victory. Roger's game sucked and he didn't put enough effort, he couldn't even get his first serve in, Shame, big s

I have been following tennis from 2004 onwards just because of Roger.. now i m no longer in love with tennis.. the same disappointments.. same pattern of winning the 1st set and loosing the match..

Roger has been following this pattern. Winning the first set then falling apart and losing...very disappointing!

game over... nothing to say... a disappointing season again.. I think federer doesn't deserve being in top 4 now because he lost all matches against murray, nadal, djokoviç this year... he couldn't win a trophy since us open 2008... he has to quit playing t
