First title in Shanghai

12.10.2014 | Tennis, Starseite 2

Roger secured his first title at the Shanghai Rolex Masters today by defeating France's Gilles Simon (ATP 29) 7-6(6), 7-6(2).

"To win the biggest tournament in Asia is a treat. I got lucky to come through the first round after saving five match points. It's been a dream week," Roger said.

Roger had to work for the victory, though. He fell behind in his first service game and had his opponent serving for the set at 4-5. But Roger just made it as he converted his second break-point when Simon netted a backhand. Roger faced two more set points at 5-6 but stretched the set into a tie-breaker. Our champ fought off another set point in the tie-break but eventually went to take the set thanks to an 8-6 lead. The second set went without breaks and Roger clearly dominated the tie-break this time, converting his first matchball to 7-2.

It is Roger's 81st title on the ATP Tour, his 23rd on Masters-1000 level. Roger has captured four titles this season so far (Shanghai, Dubai, Halle and Cincinnati). On Monday, Roger will move above Rafael Nadal into the second spot of the world rankings.

Dearest Roger,
Congratulations to you for winning the Shanghai Masters. It was such a joy to watch your magical tennis for the whole tournament. Your match against Mayer was very special. What a match that was. You fought very hard to win that match. You saved five match points, also played some great tennis in the third set. Your match against Djokovic was a master class. Your tennis is always so majestic and beautiful to watch. Good luck to you for the rest of the season. Love you always.
