Roger wins Swiss meeting

14.08.2009 | Tennis

Roger claimed a third- round win over fellow Swiss and Davis Cup partner Stanislas Wawrinka at the Montreal Masters. The 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory was his 21st consecutive match win.

"It was a tense match, you can never tell until it's over," Roger said. "Stan was serving really well. We played at a high level."

It is only a few months ago (in Monte Carlo in April) that Stan, who won the doubles gold medal at the Beijing Olympic alongside Roger, had beaten our champ. He saved four match points in the tiebreaker this time but then missed a low volley at the net to exit after one and three-quarters hours of play.

With his win Roger led the field into a totally new situation: it is the first time since the rankings began in 1973 that the top eight players in the world have all reached the quarters at the same ATP event!

Roger next meets Jo-Wilfried Tsonga from France.

I see you've been on the website for about 5 years, I assume you're a fan, yet you still do not know that Roger has Character, integrity and will settle for nothing short of fair play.. he's not for dodging, manipulating or playing underhanded

I'M BY NO MEANS INSINUATING HE SHOULD TANK EVERY SMALL STAGE MATCH,BUT,MEASURE AND PRESERVE ENERGY AS REQUIRED.ONLY ROGER CAN DETERMINE THAT. IT WAS GOING TO BE A TOUGH AND ANOTHER DISSAPPOINTING LOSS TO MURRAY IF HE HAD GONE AHEAD AND FACED M

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT HE'S DOING.
HE WILL RATHER DEAL WITH THEM ON THE BIG STAGE THAN TO EXPEND TOO MUCH ENERGY ON THE SMALL STAGES.HE WILL HAVE NOTHING LEFT IN HIS TANKS HE PLAYS AT THAT LEVEL ACROSS THE BOARD. HE HAS MORE MILEAGE ON HIS BODY

Kokko10:
You are saying Roger try to avoid Murray, Nadal and others in non-Grand Slams to avoid the "losing numbers"? I will be very happy if Roger loses to them in smaller events but beat them all in Grand Slams. I want Roger to focus on GS from now on

CORRECTION TO MY LAST POST-
MOST IMPORTANTLY I HOPE I'M WRONG ABOUT FEDERER AVOIDING MURRAY.

At Madrid Federer played against Del potro AFTER Nadal, and Federer won to meet Nadal on a CLAY Court in the final..
