First singles victory on clay in 2010

Roger has successfully mastered his first match of the Estoril Open, celebrating his first victory on clay this year. He defeated Germany's Björn Phau (ATP 138) 6-3, 6-4 in 83 minutes.

 

"It was a very important match for me today," Roger said, knowing that first rounds can be tricky. He won the Estoril crown in 2008 but skipped last year's event

 

Roger will now meet Arnaud Clément from France (ATP 83) in the quarter finals. Our champ has won 6 out of their 9 encounters so far.

30 unforced errors by Roger so far, already - and 36 by Clement. Good hold though. Good he got that early break in this set.

Of course these matches everyone is gunning for Roger, but he will keep an eye on Nadal the most. I don't Novak will cause him trouble if he is on his game on clay.

Did everyone see Roger on the cover of ESPN magazine?

Clement is very good at reading where Roger will put the ball. He is not an easy opponent for sure. Roger will have to do better to beat the likes of Djoko and Nadal.

This is sort of the way it went last year, except he did not play here, but Madrid will be the test with everyone scheduled to play and of course what draw he gets for RG
