OFF COURT - CERTAINTY AT LAST

Dear fans

As you can imagine the beginning of this season has been rather tough for me. 2007 ended with an illness which cost me a lot of energy. I was unable to play at the beginning of January. I was still taking antibiotics five days before the Australian Open, making a recovery in time for the tournament impossible. During the time in Melbourne I felt slow and kept looking for possible reasons for that – without finding an answer.

Some time later, during my holidays in Switzerland, I became severely ill again. I went to the hospital straight away to get further tests done. And it was at this time that they found out what was bothering me all along: mononucleosis. I had had it for six weeks already, meaning it would normally be over.

It was relieving to finally know why I had felt weak in Australia and also later on during my holidays. So the good news really is to be certain of what has occurred. The bad news is that I have quite some catching up to do in terms of fitness as I am not in the physical state that I would normally be in at this time of the year.

I have known for 10 days now that the illness is over. I have been back to exercising at maximum level since then, before that it had only been moderate. Unfortunately that meant that I only had about three days of intense training before Dubai.
The match I played against Andy Murray in Dubai was a good one – taking into consideration the circumstances. My expectations weren’t all too high, it was a tough draw and Andy certainly played an excellent match.

Pierre Paganini, my physical coach, had joined me in Dubai for three days to assist me with some serious training sessions. That helped a lot and I must say that I already feel strong again. I will definitely need more training in Indian Wells after the match against Pete Sampras in New York. After that, Pierre Paganini will meet up with me again in Miami for another three days of hard work. The main issue now is to get 100% fit and make up for all the training I missed out on.

I will be traveling to New York this weekend and I am really looking forward to the match against Pete. The event has been sold out for quite some time already. We will be competing in front of a crowd of 19’000 - what an atmosphere!

Thank you for all your continued support and see you all soon,

Roger

Ah, Roger...mono can take it's toll..seldom any symptoms at all EXCEPT for fatigue and that "I just feel so tired" feeling....it is very common in the states...and always more testing needed to accurately diagnose and treat it, so I am very glad you did that. It could've been a much worse diagnoses!! My thoughts are with you as you venture onto the remaining matches throughout the year, and I am looking forward to seeing a fully recuperated Roger in the Expo this Monday! Hugs, cheers and many wishes for a successful ATP race in 2008, and may you remain on top and be YOUR best......that is all we as fans could hope for. love from Ohio, Amanda, (honeysweet) your head FEDERETTE!

Dear, dear Roger:

First of all, thank you so much for remembering and writing to us.

I am so sorry to know you have been sick all this time and a little relieved to hear you are feeling better now.

But please, please do take care of yourself. As so many of your fans have already said, your health is the most important. Don't you ever try to overwork. You are still very young and have many more years to play. First get over this nasty disease completely.

Wishing you a complete and speedy recovery,
Kei
Your Japanese fan forever.

Roger, it's so nice to read you're ok now... :)
I had mono when I was a kid, and I remember the fatigue I felt during that time...
Given the circumstances it's just amazing how far you managed to advance at the Australian Open...
And the fact that you played Dubai even though you had only a couple of days of training...
I hope you're health is perfect now...
We're looking forward to see you in the exhibition and all the things coming ahead..

Dear Roger,

It's so good hearing from you. I'm almost crying. Despite all you've gone through, you remember us. And it's lovely to hear directly from you your true condition as everyone here's been speculating over your condition. Understandably, with the impressive achievements you had, and being injury free for a long time, sometimes, the body just gives in to remind you that you need to relax and take things easier. Of course, the price is costly as you lost points. But I'm confident that all things work together for your good.

It was tough not having a good start in 2007, but now that you need to take things down easier, isn't it a blesisng that you don't have much points to defend except of course Italian and Roland Garros and Hamburg which is still in May. I believe you'll be picking up points again to secure your position. You'll still reighn longer than you think because you're specially blessed and favored.

We're always behind you, Roger. Sometimes I cry because I don't pray too much and too hard for you anymore thinking that you're a super hero. But you need protection really from injury and illness, the things that are beyond your control. And this I will always pray to God to cover you always and bless you more because you are a blessing to lots of people.

We hope that you maintain you motivation and confidence to yourself. Keep on and we're not too far from you. We are with you always.

God bless you and your family!!!!

Dear Roger
Thanks so much for your update. Yesterday's NY Times article as a shock!
I'm so relieved that you know the cause of your problems and that it seems you've recovered.
At the same time, my heart breaks for you thinking of the disappointment and frustration you've been through the past couple of months, wanting to perform your best but being unable, and having no idea why... while at the same time your critics doubted your motivation to train and play and said your era is over!
I hope your luck will change with your arrival in the US and I wish you all the best in your effort to catch up. No one is better at bouncing back from set backs than you. I have faith in you and you have my full unconditional support - some of which I'll offer in person in your next 3 events (NYC-IW-Miami).
I don't expect titles and triumphs in the next few weeks/months, just some good matches that will help you build form and confidence and finally reach your best. Everything else will follow from there because when you're able to play your best you're still unbeatable!

With much love
Christina

Now all you have to do is to practise, and I'm sure u will win the next competition!!!

GOD BLESS YOU!!!

08.03.2008
Dear Roger,
Thanks so much for writing to us and explaining why you could not practice as hard as you wanted to. The mono explains a lot! I pray you are back to full strength and can enjoy the rest of the season!
Love,
Anne

Dear Roger,
Thank you for letting us know what's been going on behind the scenes. I am sorry that you had to go through tough times, but like you say, it's good that the reason is identified and now you can concentrate on getting back in shape. I wish you very best with the American hard court season. Please be careful.

Roger, you are a man of such immense character, and we admit we were bewildered at the stranger we were seeing on the courts the last couple of months. After your superhuman performance at the Masters, it was difficult to comprehend. In a way, we are so relieved to learn of the mononucleosis because suddenly it all makes sense.

In the meantime, we have been watching the hundreds of videos of you playing at your peak, and now we know you will be back.

Knowing you, this immense new challenge will be part of your incredible story, part of the legend and we have no doubt you will go on to realize all of your dreams. I, Kristina, once had a hip replacement and I was determined to come back and ski better than ever and thanks to you, I also took up tennis. You are my one-handed backhand inspiration!

We will be there to see you at Madison Square Garden on Monday. No matter how well you do, we will know that this is the beginning of your response to the challenge laid before you, and that you are more than fit to meet it.

You have all our love, admiration and respect for the giant tiger of a man that you are.

A and K in NY

Dear Roger,

thanks for taking your time to inform us yourself about your health situation.
Although the report about mononucleosis was a sad news it is good to hear that the doctors found out what was wrong with you.
All your fans are hoping that you will recover fully and are able to have a good fitness training with Pierre.
Roger, we love you and we are behind you all the time. Stay strong.

Best wishes,
