OFF COURT - CERTAINTY AT LAST

Dear fans

As you can imagine the beginning of this season has been rather tough for me. 2007 ended with an illness which cost me a lot of energy. I was unable to play at the beginning of January. I was still taking antibiotics five days before the Australian Open, making a recovery in time for the tournament impossible. During the time in Melbourne I felt slow and kept looking for possible reasons for that – without finding an answer.

Some time later, during my holidays in Switzerland, I became severely ill again. I went to the hospital straight away to get further tests done. And it was at this time that they found out what was bothering me all along: mononucleosis. I had had it for six weeks already, meaning it would normally be over.

It was relieving to finally know why I had felt weak in Australia and also later on during my holidays. So the good news really is to be certain of what has occurred. The bad news is that I have quite some catching up to do in terms of fitness as I am not in the physical state that I would normally be in at this time of the year.

I have known for 10 days now that the illness is over. I have been back to exercising at maximum level since then, before that it had only been moderate. Unfortunately that meant that I only had about three days of intense training before Dubai.
The match I played against Andy Murray in Dubai was a good one – taking into consideration the circumstances. My expectations weren’t all too high, it was a tough draw and Andy certainly played an excellent match.

Pierre Paganini, my physical coach, had joined me in Dubai for three days to assist me with some serious training sessions. That helped a lot and I must say that I already feel strong again. I will definitely need more training in Indian Wells after the match against Pete Sampras in New York. After that, Pierre Paganini will meet up with me again in Miami for another three days of hard work. The main issue now is to get 100% fit and make up for all the training I missed out on.

I will be traveling to New York this weekend and I am really looking forward to the match against Pete. The event has been sold out for quite some time already. We will be competing in front of a crowd of 19’000 - what an atmosphere!

Thank you for all your continued support and see you all soon,

Roger

Hi Roger,

Thank you for writing to us personally. I knew that something bothered you during the Australian Open and as I wrote after your loss to Novak the illness before the tournament was the main cause.
Thanks God you are in the process of recuperating from it and I hope you will be 100% fit soon and ready for the Indian Wells tournament.

Wish you health and good luck!

Florian

Roger: You are so unbelievable. Not only are you battling personal illness and fighting back from it, but you have taken the time to write to us in your own words.. this has, once again, proven to me that you love your fans as much as we love you. Thank you for thinking of us during this trying time, and I will be watching your match against Pete.. and I wish you all the best. You can do it.. and even if you don't win (Heaven Forbid) it will be a great match because we know you, and we know how hard you fight to play your best, and that always shines through.. and makes us proud to be part of your life... if only online through this web site and your words and from our living rooms... You made me love tennis again, and for that I will be eternally grateful. You should have a channel that shows all your matches..and I mean all..... some of us are scattered all over the world and it is hard to see your matches sometimes.... I hate missing even one.... Best wishes on Monday... I am very proud of you.

I am very familiar with mononucleosis and I wish you nothing but a wonderful and successful rehabilitation. You should be so proud of what you have accomplished with so serious of an illness. Our thoughts and best wishes are with you. You are our champion.

How fortunate that you were finally able to find an answer. I can only imagine your frustration at not being able to have your body respond as it has always done for you. Mirka must have been so worried and I am sad that she was put through such a stressful situation. I know we all have our stories about Mono and mine will be short. Both of my sons have had bouts with Mono at different times. One was in bed for nearly four months and the other was only sick for three weeks. God bless you and keep you safe. I am sending some positive energy to you and I hope you know always that ALL of your fans here at rf.com and around the world love and respect you VERY much...

Dear Roger,

Thanks for taking the time to write to your fans.

Hope you have a speeding recovery and regain your energy. Can't wait to see and cheer for you in Indian Wells.

Kia Ora Roger,
Whew this is such a huge relief for you, myself included along with your millions of ''friends of Rogers' who were and have been so worried for you and your situation. I just so hoped that everything was fine in your 'inner circle, but in fact the very thing that you need in your profession, of being in first grade good health was the source and so close to jeopardizing your career!! I just hope your body is totally restored with the antibodies it requires, and that, that terrible health scare is now forever dead and buried. I'm pleased that you are now able to resume your training regime to full capacity, and just know this Roger that there are many people from all walks of life who are beside you in your quest to remain at the top of your game, and are willing you on to success in fulfilingl your ambitions and dreams.
I hope you will enjoy and also gain some constructive information from again playing Pete in the upcoming exhibition match. Good luck and best of wishes for Indian Wells. Kia Kaha (Be Strong, Stay Strong), and in Health and Happiness,
Alice.
N.B. I couldn't help but take down this explanation of your star sign symbol of Leo from an astrological chart that was pinned up on a wall at a friend's house.
LEO: Symbol of Leadership - the will to rise through the quality of one's personal performance. I think it is so you - Just Do It and Go For It, Roger!!

this explains a lot. at least now you, and we, know. this should silence the critics who keep on doubting you.
