ATP - ROGER BACK IN STYLE

Roger returned from his five-week break to beat Radek Stepanek (ATP 30), 6-3, 7-6 (6), yesterday in the second round of the Madrid Masters.

"I think I moved with a spring in my step. My feeling out there was positive and confident which is a good feeling to have in the first match which tends to be very tricky," Roger said after the match.

Roger had a perfect start and took a 3-0 lead as Stepanek's serve fell apart. But the world number 30 stepped up in the second set, winning all but one of the points on his first serve, and seized the advantage in the set decider. But our champ did what he can do so well: increase the pressure in critical moments. He rallied from a 5-3 deficit in the tiebreaker with some excellent shotmaking, including a backhand that landed in the far corner on match point. Roger went on to take the tie break 8-6 and the match in one hour and 26 minutes.

Good morning everybody!!!!! Yesterday was great, watching life Roger play his second round match; unfortunately I could not share my views of the match with all of you as it happened because I ran out of battery at the end of the first set, so let me post my impressions:

1º. Impressive atmosphere, full house, although a few amongst the crowd were a bit too rowdy at times. Public basically all for Roger, although some cheered when the worm did some of his clown acting, which got to my nerves. Also, I was a bit scared when for 10 minutes or so the commercial electronic sideboards went off, as the illumination worsened, and it made me think of last year’s issue with the water pipe, which cost Roger the title, but this time, no worries, thank God.

2º. Roger looked great,, apparently totally recovered, with a spring in his footwork that has been amiss for much of the season, although my impression is that he still is not 100%, specially if pushed to the limits in a long match. I have no problem with that, because it means there is room for improvement for 2009 ☺

3º. He played a great first set, with few UE and basically no frame misshits (some of those reappeared in the second set though) and concluded it with a magnificent point; he took off in strength and never looked back in the first half hour.

4º. I have to admit that the worm improved his game in the second set, and in the tie break he netted a fairly easy volley to earn himself a couple of set points…a bit scary, because he was working himself up, acting pathetically as usual; although you have to give him credit for only losing one first service point in the second set. I have the impression that Roger internally despises the players that work themselves and the crowd in a state of frenzy, and sometimes that upsets his gracious game enough to make him commit simple errors; I suppose that’s what happens when not only the results count, but also the way you obtain them….

5. Lastly, just a few words on Nadal’s opening game vs Gulbis… Nadal did not win, Gulbis lost it; he has a lot of potential, but competition wise, he is still a bit tender; Nadal gave a very bad impression, unworthy of a Nº1, but as most of his matches, he won capitalising on the opponent’s errors….a pity most players still have not understood that Nadal doesn’t beat you, you beat yourself against him!!!!!!

Getting ready for a great match tonight versus Tsonga, should be fun to watch

Regards from Madrid

P.S. Sorry for the long post ☺
