OFF COURT - DUBAI AND DAVIS CUP

Dear Fans,

Today I am disappointed to announce that I am withdrawing from both Dubai and the Davis Cup tie in the United States. This was a hard decision to make as I am missing not only one of my favorite events on tour in Dubai but I am also missing out on an opportunity to help my country try and move on to the next round of Davis Cup. After injuring my back last fall, I did not have enough time to strengthen it completely. As a precautionary measure, I will use the next few weeks to make sure the back injury is fully rehabilitated and I am ready for the rest of the 2009 season.

As always, thanks for your continued support.
Roger

Roger, I'm sure you should have, by the time, the fastest swing once again. (and I hope you get a good body balance for the coming Grand Slam)

Yeah, not only swing, but the whole body chain starting from your preparation work before your shot, all within a flash.

You have done one thing really wrong for along the many years in playing tennis. You're praised about how still is your head and how focus you are in staring the ball before your shot.

A true master should not only be like that.

It is your opponent your eyes should stare at, never the ball. You should have felt it.

Now, train your eyes staring at your opponent next to the net all the time. Shot the ball without your eyes.

Style and tactics of playing matches, easy to pick up, forget it right now.

Hello Rogerholics,

I found this interview in a Swiss newspaper and translated it as good as I could.
I am not really a Boris Becker fan but thought he gave very good comments. I also would like to apologize to Lleyton Hewitt and all his fans (see inside the interview) Personally I hope that Hewitt will come back all the way to Nr. 2 in the world (Nr. 1 of course is reserved for our Roger)

By Boris Becker | 15:38 | 22.02.2009
Roger Federer is in the most difficult phase of his career. What ex-tennis Crack Boris Becker advises to the multiple World Athletes of the year.

Federer is motivated, he radiates joy when playing. This has also been seen in Melbourne. He was superior to his opponents, played freely. And then arrived Nadal. I can see it, he visibly cramps up. This is due to a lack of experience a lack of experience where Roger has to play against players who are eye-to-eye with him.

Federer was untouchable for many years. He didn’t know this situation of having a real opponent. Suddenly, Nadal appeared in Paris. And this was probably a 'aha' experience for both. Someone came from zero to a hundred into his kingdom and now he last defeated Roger on hard court. Such defeats are sitting very deep.

For me one of the worst defeats was in the semifinals at Roland Garros, when I clearly led against Stefan Edberg before he took me in the fifth set. It took a while until I had it processed. Young challengers are tough mentally to overcome. When I saw in Wimbledon the sharp rise of Sampras, I had a tough time mentally to overcome the situation. It has been almost like a midlife crisis for me, you start thinking that he is younger, faster, unconsumed. You focus all on the one player and how to play him, no longer playing instinctively, thinking too much.

B Becker interview continued

Like Federer in Melbourne. He broke immediately, but lost his service again. That was an exclamation point of nervousness. But I am convinced that Nadal is not shortening Roger’s career, but will extend it. For Federer it must have been boring to play versus players of the caliber of Hewitt and to win everytime. He is an intelligent player who can learn, train even harder.

Borg v McEnroe lost Wimbledon once and then stopped. Federer sees it as a challenge. What he needs to change is his attitude towards Nadal. I'm always surprised at how nice he is. He can like him off the court but only there. On court he needs to be aware and needs to think: “He cost me the last three or four Grand Slams. Without him I would have long been the greatest in history. He wants to take away something from me. Today he is my worst enemy. And I am his.”

I am convinced that Federer remains motivated. If eventually he will start to be eliminated in the semis on a regular basis then he will not be motivated any longer.
But as he has been in the last four major finals and has won one Grand-Slam Tournament this is far from a crisis.

He needs to set priorities. This means that he should leave the Davis Cup. I've also done the same back then, and in Germany they nearly crucified me. But that same year, I became number 1 in the world - and everyone was satisfied.

thanks ricofedfan *****great article ***

murray get nadal's number. He beat him the same way nadal use to beat federer. He played a lot of ball against nadal backhand and kept him guessing. all of a sudden he hit a monster shot on his forhand. it was tasty, nadal hit the net or throw the ball all over the place. If fed can win the FO by beating nadal that will take away a lot of hurts. however I am not sure he can beat nadal. he got the tool to destroy him, but the pressure is too much on fed. he needs a good coach who can strenthen his mental and tell him some real truth about his game.

Boris Becker is so right. I only hope that Roger would listen to his advice. Be more offensive when you play Nadal, Roger. As your faithful fan, I'm confident that you are going to win many more grand slams and dominate men's tennis as long as you play. You are the GOAT, Roger. Rock on, baby.

Dear Roger,

I'm sorry that you had to withdraw from two tournaments that you very much wanted to play but at the same time I'm happy that you're listening to your body. Get fit and well, dear one.

Please listen to Boris Becker. He is so right about Nadal.

Always your fan
