ATP - ROGER BLASTS THROUGH TO FINAL!

Roger showed another great display today to reach the Australian Open final! He defeated Andy Roddick in straight sets 6-2, 7-5, 7-5 and is on course for a record-tying 14th Grand Slam title.

"Andy's been playing really playing well so I knew I had a tough match ahead of me," Roger said. "I thought I played really well tonight because Andy played good too, so it was fun."

With Rafael Nadal as the favourite for his semi final, Roger commented: "He's showing why he's the best player in the world. I would love to play him in the final, that's for sure."

The victory also meant that Roger emulated Pete Sampras by reaching 18 grand slam finals. The only person to beat Roger in a major final is Nadal, three at Roland Garros and once at Wimbledon. Ivan Lendl played 19 grand slam finals.

It was demoralising for Andy Roddick today, who came into the match revitalised by a change in coach but got off to an appalling start and argued with the chair umpire as the first set slipped past in 32 minutes. Roger had the seventh seed on a string and he reeled off 12 straight points to take the second, breaking for 6-5 and serving out with grim precision for the two-set lead.
Roddick tangled again with the umpire when he swore loudly and received a code violation, and was left staggered when Roger dug himself out of trouble with a brilliant drop shot, lob and stop-volley to hold for 5-5. The American was then guilty of a howler as he patted the ball to Roger's feet with the court begging, gifting the crucial break point which our champ converted with an unstoppable forehand before calmly serving out the win.

Roger can join Roy Emerson, André Agassi, Jack Crawford and Ken Rosewall as the only men to have won four or more titles in Melbourne. Way to go, Roger!

I have a feeling Roger will run out of tactics in front of Nadal.

There's not much you can do.

30.01.2009
Nadal is almost 23 , the same age Roger took over the world rankings , that's the age when a player matures and fine tunes his game , just like Fed back in 2004 , now it's Nadal's prime.

You can't reverse the clock , one important thing , Nadal is 5 years younger than Fed.

30.01.2009
To be honest, I can see this next match against Rafael going either way. Rafael could claw through and capture his first hard court title, and I can also see Federer holding up his 14th grand slam trophy. Personally, as all of Federer's fans do also, I hope the second one is what happens, and that the match goes to Federer.
Whoever wins will have to work very hard for it. There is nearly no doubt(unless Federer works another one of his miracles, which is a possibility) that it will be a five setter, which will be all the more wonderful if Federer can get a little of that sweet revenge from the Wimbledon five setter final. But, Federer and Rafael have never met each other at any match at the Australian open previously. Nobody knows how the match will go, exept that it will be very thrilling and exciting and, of course, filled with amazing tennis(what match isn't when Federer plays in it?).
However Sunday's match goes, I do know one thing, I'll be proud of Federer for what he's accomplished so far, this past couple of weeks, and his whole life. All of my cheering and encouragement will be going to Federer at three a.m Sunday morning in my living room.
Bottom line- if Roger sets his mind to it, and if he really, really wants it, that will be enough fuel to ignite his specially, unique burning fire, and not even Nadal could ever put that fire out.
Go Roger!

To Boting ,

Tennis doesn't know the word "luck" , it is only hard work , just blood sweat and tears on the practice court.

Has Roger won 13 GS by luck ?

He worked like hell to earn every one of them , he simply wasn't "lucky".

30.01.2009

Vamos Roger: este año volverás a demostrar que en el Tenis los caballeros son vencedores. Relajate y uega tu mejor tenis en frente de Nadal: no tienes nada que demostrar de tu clase y él si.

30.01.2009
-eee- are you a fan of Roger? If you are, I think you are making your life very difficult with all this pessimism. Think about it. If you go to work, or school, and before you go out everyone around you, who are supposed to like you, tell you that you cannot do it or that you would fail or mark my word you wil not succeed. How will this make you feel on your way to your activity?
Of course, you might no be Roger's fan, in that case I hope you enjoy the play and results of your other favorite tennis player.

Roger will do what it takes to win the final. He always does.

30.01.2009
Lucy58 ,

"Roger will do what it takes to win the final".

If you're so sure , Can you swear on your heart that Roger will win ?

If you can , then I might believe you.

30.01.2009
To Boting ,

I have a question for you :

Define "LUCK" ?

30.01.2009
Hello Fans,

Chris and I are organizing our whole weekend around getting up tomorrow at 3 a.m. for the final. Since our Champ has done his part to get there, we can do no less. Really excited about the match.

So pleased to see Verdasco keep his game up throughout the five sets. You could see how crestfallen he was when he double-faulted on match point. I'm really impressed with his game, despite the loss. He and Lopez really showed me something in that Davis Cup tie in November and Verdasco again today.

I'm a little amused about all the sturm and drang on the site about whether Roger can beat Nada on a hardcourt. One thing is certain--Rog came here to win and he will leave it on the court. Let's hope the good game and good serve show up from point one. I do think Nada's achilles heel is bouncing back quickly enough after a grueling match on hardcourts. He also will leave it all on the court, but I suspect he will have less energy in the tank and more body pain to deal with. I expect a 200% effort, though.

Chris's take on the Roger-DelPo match: Roger at the net afterwards: "I'm leaving you alive so you can go back and tell the others...I'm back!"

***Tilou, p. 15, thank you so much for your kind words. ***Tuluta, too! I'll see you all for the final.

***Hughsie, p. 25, loved your comments re: the media. I hope you're holding up well--the heat sounds absolutely vicious, but I guess you're used to Australian summers. So wish I could be there watching with you.

Roger, I have every faith in you. I know how motivated you are, how well you have prepared. I know you know how to win GS finals. Your record is awesome. I know how much you want to right that lopsided H2H against Nada. Rest, relax, enjoy your day. War tomorrow!

Cheers,
MC
