ATP - ROGER LOSES THIRD ROUND MATCH

Roger suffered a 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(4) defeat against Marcos Baghdatis at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

"It was one of those matches that just happens," Roger said. "I didn't play terrible. It just happens. I was doing many things right, but then the next thing you know, I'm stuck in a third set and you never know what's going to happen. It was a decent match but maybe wrong choices at the wrong time for me."

Roger certainly had his chances with a total of three match points, two of which came at 5-4 of the second set, when he took a 15-40 lead on Baghdatis' serve but fired first a forehand and then a backhand long and Baghdatis went on to hold serve and even the set. Baghdatis broke our champ in the next game and then held serve to take the set. The last time Roger surrendered a match after holding at least one match point was in the 2006 Rome final, against Rafael Nadal.

Roger took a 3-1 lead in the third set with a break in the fourth game, but Baghdatis - whose head-to-head record against Federer includes a loss in the 2006 Australian Open final - broke back in the seventh game, setting up the break with a blistering cross-court winner before Roger netted a forehand.

The next tournament on Roger's schedule is the Sony Ericsson which starts on March 22nd in Miami.

Dearest Roger,

Sorry for this loss. But it's far better to lose a match than get injured here. Miami is so near. Rest up and enjoy Miami!

Always,
Kei

Well Roger, it seems things are coming back to you.. It was one of those matches where you certainly had chances and was playing really well.. but a lapse of concentration and a loss of hope took you down again. It was like that Tsonga match in Rogers Cup where you lost a match that was in your hands and you let it slip. You seemed to suffer. But I know like last year you will bounce back. Rog it's time to understand that Grand Slams are not everything. When you'll retire your overall performance will be overshadowed by your loss here in masters 1000 tours, no matter you have 16 masters 1000. I just wish you good luck and hope that you'll make a comeback and not let this year become the same as last year where you suffered a lot of losses in the first half. Let this loss become a lesson and inspire you. You still have dominating tennis left in you.
Come back Champion. Waiting for you, counting on you.

17.03.2010
It was to the wire Roger! Baggy is playing to his limit at the moment and you are still building. You played really well and had you had chance with lesser players that the others seem to have in the draw you would have had a bit more time. Looking forward to seeing you in Miami! xxx

17.03.2010
Baghdatis played a superb tennis and deserved victory..if it would be a five setter, fedex u would definitely win...anyways better luck for the next tournament..as u r no more in indianwells, so tournament is over for me...

17.03.2010
it's ok, champ. you can't win 'em all. as far as i'm concerned, you've won plenty already to keep me in your corner forever. take heart, because all your loyal fans stand beside and behind you always. God bless!

17.03.2010
Sorry you lost champ. Didn't see the match but something must have gone badly wrong for you to squander the match points. Bounce back for next tournament please.
