OFF COURT - CERTAINTY AT LAST

Dear fans

As you can imagine the beginning of this season has been rather tough for me. 2007 ended with an illness which cost me a lot of energy. I was unable to play at the beginning of January. I was still taking antibiotics five days before the Australian Open, making a recovery in time for the tournament impossible. During the time in Melbourne I felt slow and kept looking for possible reasons for that – without finding an answer.

Some time later, during my holidays in Switzerland, I became severely ill again. I went to the hospital straight away to get further tests done. And it was at this time that they found out what was bothering me all along: mononucleosis. I had had it for six weeks already, meaning it would normally be over.

It was relieving to finally know why I had felt weak in Australia and also later on during my holidays. So the good news really is to be certain of what has occurred. The bad news is that I have quite some catching up to do in terms of fitness as I am not in the physical state that I would normally be in at this time of the year.

I have known for 10 days now that the illness is over. I have been back to exercising at maximum level since then, before that it had only been moderate. Unfortunately that meant that I only had about three days of intense training before Dubai.
The match I played against Andy Murray in Dubai was a good one – taking into consideration the circumstances. My expectations weren’t all too high, it was a tough draw and Andy certainly played an excellent match.

Pierre Paganini, my physical coach, had joined me in Dubai for three days to assist me with some serious training sessions. That helped a lot and I must say that I already feel strong again. I will definitely need more training in Indian Wells after the match against Pete Sampras in New York. After that, Pierre Paganini will meet up with me again in Miami for another three days of hard work. The main issue now is to get 100% fit and make up for all the training I missed out on.

I will be traveling to New York this weekend and I am really looking forward to the match against Pete. The event has been sold out for quite some time already. We will be competing in front of a crowd of 19’000 - what an atmosphere!

Thank you for all your continued support and see you all soon,

Roger

Roger,
Thank you so much for writing to us personally. After reading about your illness, many of us have been worried about you. It must have been awful to feel sick and not know what was wrong, as well as frustrating not to be able to practice or play at your best.

I'm so sorry things haven't gone well so far this year, but you have showed a lot of strength.
We all hope that you will continue to get better and stay healthy, and that the rest of the year will be successful and enjoyable.
Take good care of yourself. We will always love and support you.
Sarah

Hi Roger, You are a born winner and for that reason losing hurts alot. When you lose you feel like you are letting others down and it then hurts even more. You have a passion for the sport and are driven by achievements. The good times will roll again, I have absolutely no doubt about that especially being supported by your forever ‘strength’ namely Mirka who I admire and respect deeply for supporting you every step of the way. I cant wait until you put that 'Nolie' in his place, I cant stand him and deep down I know you cant either! Rog, when you are at your best no one can come close to that level no matter how hard they try. Remember this, you are a one in a million billion! You take it easy. Wish I could be in NY to see your match with Pete :( Good luck with your recovery and god willing I pray you stay healthy. I can’t wait for Wimbledon and our quest for a 6th straight title!!! :)

Hi Rogi! Be Careful please! If you're not ready don't play! Because we don't love only the player but we love also the great man that you are! But if you're ready so... Beat the hell up that Clown... I mean you know what i mean! You're the best of all time and you're also human! You'll win everything AGAIN!!!!

Onwards to the rest of the year!! Take it easy and build up your fitness bit by bit. The year hasn't started as you would have liked, but there are so many opportunities still ahead for '08. We're all behind you!

I'm glad that you are more satisfied with your physical conditions now and that you have a precise training program ....

I knew that there was something wrong because in Melbourne and Dubai you were not the Roger (tennis master-rank 1 player) that we are used to ..... but you were always the Roger that we loved, who always had a positive attitude, loved his fans, and credited his opponents ...

When I saw that you had wrote here to your fans I was overwhelmed with excitement and I'm glad you know that we are here to support you, we are not only here, we are also there .... we are everywhere to support ....

Go get 'em CHAMP !!!!

We love you ;)

Thank you Roger for informing us about your health problems. I pray you are really over it because that is more important than a trohy. As much as we your sport achievements thrill us I personally find that your personal well-being is paramount.

Good luck in IW and Miami. Don't get frustrated if you cannot find your form yet. It's a long year with many opportunities to win more trophies and break more records.

Have patience, enjoy playing again and be assured of our support always.
