OFF COURT - ROGER, BORG AND MCENROE HEADLINE SHOWDOWN IN MALAYSIA

Our star Roger and tennis legends Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe will headline the “Showdown of Champions Kuala Lumpur 2008”, an extravaganza of challenge matches at the 12,000 seat Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur on November 18.

A fourth player, either newly crowned Wimbledon Champion Rafael Nadal or American ace James Blake will complete the cast at the star studded entertainment extravaganza.

The format of the event is especially interesting as it will culminate in a doubles showdown involving all four players. The format of the event will see one set between Borg and McEnroe followed by one set between Federer and the fourth player. The final doubles set will pit Federer and Borg against McEnroe and the other star.

It is anticipated that fans from all around the region will make their way to Malaysia to catch these “Greats” in action. This comes in the wake of the highly successful matches here last year. This year however will be the first time such an array of tennis superstars, both past and present, will be taking part in such an event in this region.

There will be an element of charity in this year’s event where fans may bid on-line for a host of signed player items and experiences such as the on-court coin toss with the players for each of the three matches. The players have their own charities and foundations which they will contribute to through the event. The four charity organisations that the players will contribute to, through the event, are the Roger Federer Foundation and a charity of choice of Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe’s  Foundation  and either the Rafael Nadal Foundation or James Blake’s Cancer Charity at Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, USA.

Meanwhile, the tickets for the event will be available at all Ticket Axcess outlets beginning from the July 23rd. As interest in this tournament will be very high, tennis fans are advised to make their purchases early to miss out on this event. The ticketing hotline is +603-7711 5000.

In the Wimbledon finals against Nadal and in this loss against Simon, you didnt challenge calls which went against you.

Wimbledon saw television relplays clearly show that Roger lost three very valuable points which were wrongly called against him.

Simmilarly in the deciding set against Simon when Roger lost serve after leading 4-3, he had actually won the point but the ball was called out.

Whats wrong with his judgment? Is there a problem with his vision or he wants to please people by not challenging calls.

It hurts when our champ actually wins the point but is wrongly called out.

That game cost Roger dearly and tilted the match in Simons favour.

Im not taking anything away from Simon, he was the better player but Roger has to be more aggressive in his mind.

Even against Nadal he dint question bad calls. Wheres all this headed towards?

Good for you, Roger!

Remember to HAVE FUN!! Especially if anyone says they don't like the exhos you do for whatever reason. You guys are bringing great tennis to the world!!

-meanwhile, looks like everybody has their own charity these days....

Hey Fed.
Have fun in Malaysia. Wish I could be there.

Its a good cause and will please fans a lot. But Roger has to win Beijing Gold and the US Open. More than anything else, Roland Garros 2009. The rest can wait. By playing in such non competitive games, Roger is losing his sting and killer instinct.

Or maybe since he has acheived a lotttttttttt he doesnt need to fush himself further.

Whatever the case as long as you are having fun Roger, we are happy for you.

Sarah .... well said.
Every Tom Dick and Harry has a so called charity???

Some use it for their own self flagellation

Unlike our hero who has been a stirring role model and a model citizen of the society.... both on and off the court.

if you look at the history and rivalry that there was between McEnroe/Borg ir would be nice if Rafa will be the 4th player!

anyways, I wish you lots of fun!!

Roger, it's great to know that you always try to give back to people who needs your help. You are blessed because of this.
This will be a good opportunity for you have fun and relax. It's nice to know other players have done the same as you such as the foundation you have established.
I hope I can watch you in Malaysia and that someday soon you will visit the Philippines too.

That's so good news! :)) Roger, Darling, i hope you go there with pleasure :) Finally - a match in which you don't have to worry about anything! That's why you are going to show us the best Federer that has ever played!
You're such an adorable man, Rogie. I'm looking forward to seeing you play without stress and all.
Loving you!
Chloe

Dear Roger,

That is great.
You know these tennis matches are not shown on my tv channels. So when I see these on your website I am so disappointed.
I think it will be interesting and I hope you do collect a good amount for your foundation.
Meanwhile enjoy your tennis and help us enjoy by winning tournaments or at least stay till the finals as then we see you play maximum.

24.07.2008
Hi guys! Does anyone know the link for this event? I would like to find out how much the tickets are. If you have any idea please send it to me. Thank you so much!

Hello Roger.

Rogers Cup is over. And yes, you are lost. So what, then MOVE ON. I know the Wimbledon loss takes time to recover. Try to put all the grivances into momentum!

Is it your first loss? Every athletes has suffered losses. You have no serious injuries, still young (you are not 80!) and is passionate about Tennis. What can bring you down? Your only enemy between you and success is your spirit.
Be strong mentally.

Put aside all these stupid press. They are all playing word games - zooming in all losses and zooming out success.

Stay away from all those nonsense records. They are additions to your glories; it can drag you down when you are depressing.

From now, you only have one goal, that is the Olympics ahead. Don't let other things distract you.

You have all the fans supporting behind you. Show us you are capble of defeating losses. This is much more important than beating any other tennis players just as we won't blame you for your epic loss in Wimbledon.

God bless,
Castella

Looks like Malaysia is getting to be the site for great tennis exhibitions match like this. Fed beat Sampras in this arena city last year. Wonder when they will hold this in Jakarta. Will see if I can fly there to finally see the greats play. It would be outrageous if Borg and Mcenroe wear their old vintage clothes (Fila and Taccini) and use the old wooden rackets. Yes, hopefully it could be Rafa..but two lefties vs. two right handers maybe not a fair combination? They may have to change formats.

24.07.2008
Hi Roger,

Wow!! I can't believe that you are coming to Malaysia again!! I have to tell you that I'm so excited. I missed your matches here last year but I'll be definitely there this year!! Hope to see you and keep playing well..

24.07.2008
if roger keeps on losing like he is at the moment - who will be interested? anyway roger has lost his way too much because of these commercial/charitable giggs...

24.07.2008
Dear Rog

I'm a huge, huge fan of yours as player and as a person, but I can not belive the timing of this announcement. You have just been humiliated in your first match in Toronto by a very talented but much lesser ranked opponent. If there was any time that you had to step up to the mark and show the world that you were over the devasting loss at Wimbledon, this was it and you failed. And then you announce an exhibition match - you will be lucky by then to be number 2 in the world if you carry on the way you are. If you want to enjoy your very well deserved wealth and fame then you have earnt the right to, but you will never be a major force in tennis again. You seem totally distracted by commerical opportunities while you game stumbles. You talk the talk in press conferences as of course you must, but you confidence is increasingly built on quick sand. If you're doing well you're fine, if you're not, you doubt yourself and make so many unforced errors. If you really want to stay on top and make the most the most of your unbelievable talent, then you have to GOT to rethink things. Of course confidence is everything but you are not the best in the world anymore and the more you insist you are down to rankings, the more arrogant, out of touch and in denial you appear. Please Roger, get some tough advice or your glorious career is the slide. Please note Roger fans, this is not an abusive email as we all adore Rog, but a sad admission that things are going very wrong.

Noyou post is not an abusive mail but a very sad and down to the point analyse. I do agree with you that the timing of this announcement suck and I wish that Roger would focus more on his tennis and the coming HC season.
There is almost a lack of motivation on the court at time and it is very sad to see.
I love Roger's game and his personality and will support him always, that does not mean that I will try to find excuses when he loses matches he should have won by letting his focus down.
I am not happy by this exebition circus, I think Roger needs to set his goals for the future unless his goals are to limited to exebition matches and commercials .... no serious tennis,
nobody can do it all.

24.07.2008
Dear Roger,
it's a great news that u r coming to Malaysia again. Looking forward to see u in person again. please regroup your concentration & just forget about yesterday. Don't worry u will win olympic gold & us open. Best of luck for the rest of the season.

24.07.2008
dear Roger!
you act like an old player! comeback at your level and win atp tournament.
all fans are tired of you against sampras. we want your comeback!!!
training hard!

24.07.2008
This is amazing!

Roger, don't listen to 'fans' who say it's not good for your game to do exhibition matches.

Borg, McEnroe, Federer...''greats''
YES he's on the same list.

HAVE FUN IN MALAYSIA!
I'm very proud of you Roger, everything you've already achieved.

ÁND THE SEASON ISN'T OVER YET!

Good luck! We believe in you, you can do it!
