May 9, 2019 -- Madrid, Spain
Roger took the court firing on all cylinders today in Madrid.
Facing the always electrifying, Gael Monfils, the Swiss Star quickly won the first set without dropping a game. However, Monfils wasn't going to let the match go that easily. He battled back to take the second set and push it to three.
The third set proved to be a fight til the end as well. Fighting off match points to push it to a thrilling decisive tie-breaker, we saw some classic Roger shot making as he decisively took the breaker to win 6-0, 4-6, 7-6(3). This goes down as his 1,200th match win!
His next round will not be easy as he faces Dominic Thiem who has proven to always be dangerous and most recently beat Roger in the finals at the BNP Paribas Open.
